Chapter 18

The dress was somewhat scandalous. The red lace dress didn’t leave much up to the imagination. The slits of the dress encroached on my hip bones and the draping of the lace straps entwined with blush gemstones that hung off my shoulders.

The deep plunging neckline exposed some strong cleavage with my back completely exposed. My heels were clear and sparkly. The King wanted me to be his puppet. He wanted me to wear this so he could control me.

We’d see about that.

I pulled my hair back into a low ponytail, picked up my crown, which they so kindly kept for me since the last capture, and placed it on top of my head. Unlike the usual me, I don’t think I have had one joyful smile since I was captured. I couldn’t even find it in me to fake a smile.

A raging, powerful princess with no plan. I took a deep breath, walked to the doors, and knocked, and the guards immediately opened them.

I could sense their thoughts immediately as I walked out in my dress, their eyes studying me. Lust.

How disgusting, but it proved my point. I knew I looked good and would use it to my advantage tonight. It wasn’t so bad holding all the cards, all the power, but I sure felt like that wilted chrysanthemum right about now. I was drained emotionally and physically, but I couldn’t let the King win. I had to keep going.

I stopped and knocked on Madok’s door, and when he opened it, I saw a faint bruise forming on his eye, but other than that, he looked utterly gorgeous in his black tie suit and crown. I wanted to smile, but I physically couldn’t.

“Wow, Clara. You are breathtaking.”

I looked at him and spoke confidently, “Thank you, now let’s go. I have some people to see.”

Madok walked behind me a few steps to allow me into the ballroom first. “So what’s the plan?”

As we approached the room, I could hear the voices. The roar of a crowd waiting to be entertained.

Before entering, I took a deep breath and turned to answer Madok’s question, “Go along with everything I do tonight. It’s for your own good. They want to see a united front, and they certainly will.”

He nodded, and I reached out and grabbed his hand. He still trailed behind me, allowing me to lead this endeavor. I needed to find a way to leave this place and return to my parents, wherever they might be, so I could know what needed to happen next to break this curse.

The guards gripped the doors to the ballroom and pushed. The doors clattered loudly and then opened. All the eyes in the room turned to Madok and me.

Looking back at him, I saw he had a goofy grin.

I spoke through clenched teeth, “What is that stupid smile for? We’re supposed to be serious and angry.”

I purposefully strolled to make sure everyone noticed.

“It’s just that I’ve never seen you this serious. It’s cute,” Madok whispered.

I rolled my eyes at him and walked into the room towards the King of Aster.
